This is always a challenge for me. I love music of all kinds. So when it comes to practising holiness and discernment in what I listen to, it’s so easy to think ‘oh whatever, swear words or lyrics promoting an unrighteous lifestyle, they’re not gonna affect me and my relationship with God.’
And yet, what I listen to inevitably shapes the things I think. Romans 12:2 calls us to not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of our minds, that by testing we may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. God has given us His Holy Spirit, new desires, a new heart and a new mind to love and serve Him with everything that we are, as living sacrifices.
Paul further elaborates on matters of the mind in Philippians:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
- Philippians 4:8
I want to serve, love and honour God through the music I listen to, and show others the incredible joy of living in Christ! May the music we cherish glorify God in every way, so that Jesus’ name is lifted up above all else, for He is truly worthy of our worship.
